I have proudly represented Redenhall with Harleston Town Council at local and regional ceremonies recognising the work and sacrifices of our armed forces.
Armed Forces Covenant
I supported the Town Council signing the Armed Forces Covenant. The Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
World War One Tablecloth
In 2018 a unique piece of World War One history was discovered in Harleston, a three-foot square linen tablecloth, signed by many soldiers who stayed at the two Red Cross hospitals in the town between 1914-1918. The tablecloth was handed over to Terry Pegg, Branch Secretary of Harleston Branch of The Royal British Legion.
The tablecloth contains some 140 names and signatures, including some of the Red Cross nurses and staff who worked at the hospital, whilst many of the soldier names include service and unit details. International signatures came from France, Australia and Canada.
I supported Terry Pegg in the promotion of his research into a tablecloth which is now on display in the Council offices.
Further details about the story of the tablecloth can be found on the British Legion website and the Imperial War Museum website.
Memorial for Lost Lives
I support current efforts for recognition of the armed forces personal who lost their lives in air plane crashes at the Briar Farm during World War Two. I will give my backing to requests to name a street and install a monument in the housing development at Briar Farm, in recognition of the lives lost.
There are plans that some ammunition which came from the Wellington Bomber that crashed on the 9th March 1942 will be included in a display in the Harleston Museum this year.
